I am an Associate Professor in Politics and Women, Gender & Sexuality at the University of Virginia. I also am a co-editor of the American Political Science Review. My research investigates how liberal democracies can become more inclusive and just. My current book project is: A Clash is Never Inevitable: Beyond Culture Versus Women's Rights and How To Fight Imperial Sexism Instead. It compares policy controversies about the French full-face veil ban at the European Court of Human Rights, the legalization of polygyny in South Africa, and the reform of the marrying out rule for Indigenous women in Canada. I also have a second project investigating actions that can impede political participation. My first book, Women’s Rights in Democratizing States (Cambridge University Press, 2010), compares women's political participation in South Africa, Poland, and Chile and finds that as public debate becomes more open and inclusive, women’s rights advance.
