About

I am a political scientist at Dublin City University. I am interested in most areas of comparative politics and have published on many topics including political economy, business and politics, political communication, and East-Central Europe. My research has been published in leading journals such as World Politics, the European Journal of Political Research, International Studies Quarterly, and European Union Politics. My book If Money Talks, What Does It Say? Corruption and Business Financing of Political Parties (Oxford University Press 2013) won the Brian Farrell Prize of the Political Studies Association of Ireland for best book in political science published in that year. I am also a recipient of the Dublin City University President's Award for Outstanding Research. In addition to my work at DCU, I have held Visiting Fellowships at the European University Institute and the Australian National University. I have taught a wide range of courses on comparative politics, European studies and research methods at BA, MA and PhD levels. Course materials can be accessed on DCU's Loop site. I am happy to consider supervising a wide range of topics in comparative politics. My PhD graduates are Cristina Bucur (co-supervised with Robert Elgie), Elvin Gjevori, Ian Kelly (co-supervised with Francesco Cavatorta), and Michael Seifu (co-supervised with Robert Elgie), Mohsen Moheimany and Aytan Gahramanova. Post-doctoral scholars who have worked with me include Michael Courtney, Gemma McNulty, Juan Muñoz-Portillo, and Sergiu Lipcean. I studied at University College Dublin, Nuffield College, Oxford and the London School of Economics and Political Science.
