I am a PhD candidate at the University of Edinburgh (Science and Technology Studies). My research is focused on analysing through a participant observation how is it that quantitative tools (rankings, indexes, machine learning, forecasting) come to be created. I conducted two participant observations, one at the Yale Centre for Environmental Law and Policy (YCELP) the production of the Environmental Performance Index (EPI). And one at the Uppsala Department of Peace and Conflict while constructing the Violence Early Warning System (ViEWS) forecasting tool. By working with the researchers in charge of the EPI and ViEWS, I have been able to analyse the multiple understandings around data and its management as well as what is it that these tools create as results. I'm particularly interested in understanding how we quantify the environment and the meanings that we give to those quantifications.
