About

KURNIAWATI HASTUTI DEWI is senior researcher at the Research Center for Politics, National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia (BRIN), specializing in gender and politics, women’s leadership, and Asian Studies. She is alumna of prestigious international training on gender: International Training on the Equal Status and Human Rights of Women in Southeast Asia by Raoul Wallenberg Institute (RWI) in 2008 & 2010; workshop Phase 1 & 3 Korea-ASEAN Cooperation Project (KACP) on Education and Exchange Program for Young Scholars in Women’s Studies by Asian Association of Women’s Studies, ASEAN-MOTAF, ASEAN-ROK in 2012 & 2016. Her PhD dissertation in Kyoto University (2012) was written with gender perspectives on the rise and victory of Javanese women political leaders which was published as a book "Indonesian Women and Local Politics: Islam, Gender and Networks in Post-Suharto Indonesia" (NUS Press & Kyoto University Press, 2015). Former Secretary-General of Asian Association of Women's Studies (AAWS 2020-2022), founder and coordinator of the Gender and Politics research team at LIPI/BRIN (2015-2023), she explored the rise of female political leaders in Indonesia's local elections, resulting in a five-series publication one of its published by Spinger (2022). She lad research project assessing Indonesian women’s NGOs capacity and response to violence against women in politics (VAWIP) in post-reformasi Indonesia (2020-2023). In the lead up to the 2024 General Election, she initiated collaborative workshops to increase capacity of female legislative candidates including to raise awareness on the issue of violence against women in politics with the Habibie Center, Indonesian Women Coalition, Perludem, and organized Public Talk on VAWIP supported by AIFIS. She won various research grants on gender and politics including the SUMITOMO Foundation Grant 2013 on female leaders' initiative in response to climate change in Indonesia and Japan, fellow of the Regional Asia Human Rights Research Initiative by Raoul Wallenberg Institute (RWI) in 2019, AIFIS (American Institute for Indonesian Studies) RISTEK BRIN fellow workshop in 2020 with project on gender and the city of Jakarta. In 2022, she was selected to be one of the 25 women leaders in ASEAN Countries to join training “Women and Leadership for ASEAN Countries” by INSP (Institut National du Service Public) & Institut Francais Indonesia (IFI). Currently, she leads research project on the strategy of women’s grassroots group in addressing environmental issues and climate in change in Indonesia and Japan, and research on strategy of young female legislative candidate in 2024 Indonesia’s General Election.
