Professor Stoddart's research, teaching, and student supervision orients around environment & society, social movements, communications and culture, and tourism and recreation. He is co-lead of the Canadian team of the cross-national COMPON (COMParing climate change POlicy Networks) project. His recent book with Alice Mattoni and John McLevey, "Industrial Development and Eco-Tourism: Can Oil Extraction and Nature Conservation Co-Exist? (2020, Palgrave MacMillan) adopts an international comparative approach to studying the cultural, governance, and social movements dimensions of the connections and tensions between offshore oil and nature-oriented tourism at sites across the North Atlantic: Denmark, Iceland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Norway, and Scotland.
