I am a PhD candidate in the Department of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Glasgow. My thesis is focused on the analysis of the discourse of the populist Right, utilising Greece's Golden Dawn and France's Front National as case studies. By utilising the NVivo software I have codified the rhetoric of both parties in a period of 4 years, including two different election periods and created a detailed analysis of the key issues which they frame, and how they utilise them in order to garner the support of the public. Furthermore, I also showcase that Golden Dawn is essentially a former evolutionary stage of Front National since they have not yet outgrown their protest party identity, and have analysed the key similarities and differences between these two parties. Once the thesis is completed it will provide a detailed blueprint for the study of discourse utilised by the populist Right, showcasing how the frames which they create evolve over time and according to specific events such as crises and election periods. I am interested in the study of political discourse, and thus I intend to expand on the methodological and theoretical frameworks created for my thesis and apply them to other case of nationalism and populist politics.
