About

Niki Johnson holds a Master's degree in Latin American Studies and a PhD in Politics from the University of London. She is currently Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Universidad de la República, in Uruguay, where she is director of the Politics, Gender and Diversity Research Area and joint director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Feminist Studies. She has published widely on political representation, gender electoral quotas and parity democracy; gender equality policy and institutional design; social movements and citizen rights. Her current research is focused on gender-based violence against women in politics in Uruguay and the right-wing conservative backlash against women’s and LGBTIQ+ rights in Latin America. Her research work goes hand in hand with outreach activities and technical consultancies, working at the national level with women politicians, state agencies responsible for the design, implementation and evaluation of public policies for gender equality, and with civil society organizations, especially feminist and Afro-descendant women's organizations. She has also worked as a consultant on topics relating to political representation, quotas and parity democracy for international organizations such as International IDEA, UN Women, Parlatino, the Organization of American States and the Inter-American Development Bank.
