Shaping policy in a dynamic world: New trends in interest group and lobbying research

The Summer School of our Standing Group on Interest Groups brings together leading scholars in the fields of interest groups, lobbying and civil society to deliver an intensive course on the core aspects of interest group research.


The 2024 edition of the Summer School hosted by our Standing Group on Interest Groups delves into the new dynamics and trends in researching interest group politics and lobbying, guided by renowned scholars and practitioners. The intensive curriculum focuses on recent trends and innovative approaches in lobbying and advocacy across diverse political systems and policy-making arenas.

Whether you are an advanced Master's student or a PhD student, this programme promises unparalleled insights into how interest groups shape policy in our ever-changing world.

The event will also provide the opportunity for a debate with practitioners on challenges in lobbying regulation in the EU, as part of an international roundtable taking place on 26 June.

Join us to deepen your understanding of political advocacy and lobbying research, and broaden your network alongside peers and leading scholars from around the world.

The Summer School is hosted at the Inter-University Centre (IUC) Dubrovnik, in collaboration with the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Zagreb, as a member of the IUC and local partner.

Set against the backdrop of the stunning, historically rich city of Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its breathtaking architecture and vibrant academic community, the event offers an unmissable opportunity to learn, network, and be inspired in one of Europe's most captivating destinations.

Who can apply

The Summer School is open to PhD students, research Master’s students, and advanced Master’s students from political science, public administration, public affairs, communication, international relations, or related areas.

To apply, you must submit the following as a single PDF file, no later than 8 April 2024:

  • Motivation letter (up to 500 words)
  • Research paper abstract (up to 500 words)

You will be informed about the outcome of your application by email by mid April 2024.

Partial or incomplete applications will not be processed.

Expectations of the participants

Participants are expected to present their research in the form of a research paper (6,000 to 8,000 words research paper or book chapter) and to discuss another participant’s paper.

We will also accept project proposals or research plans. Students should upload their papers by 17 June 2024.

The Summer School will be delivered in English; you will therefore be expected to have a good command of written and spoken English.

Registration fee

A registration fee of €250 applies and includes city tour and welcome reception. A link to register for the Summer School will be sent to successful applicants directly.

Please note that your registration is not confirmed until your application has been accepted and your payment is received in full.


To encourage students from diverse backgrounds and universities to attend, successful participants can apply for a reduced registration fee.

To apply, please submit within your application to the Summer School a statement outlining why you feel you require the reduced fee, along with evidence that you are not in receipt of any other funding for the event.

Participants should explore all available funding options provided by their university, including scholarships, grants, and bursaries, before applying for the reduced registration fee.

The organisers have booked twenty rooms for participants of the Summer School at the Student Centre/Dormitory (Marka Marojice 2b, 20000 Dubrovnik) at the following prices:

  • Single room (breakfast included) – €85
  • Double room (breakfast included) – €100

If you are interested in booking one of these options, please indicate this in your application. The accommodation will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
