Curious about Social Network Analysis and its applications in political network research? Join our POLNET School this September for an enriching learning experience curated by the Standing Group on Political Networks.

About

Social Network Analysis (SNA) is a promising methodological tool and theoretical approach, with rapidly growing uptake in recent years. It offers a broad range of quantitative applications across political science, sociology, and organisational studies.

The POLNET team has been delivering an extensive programme of SNA courses for over two decades. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the School, which will return to its founding institution, the University of Konstanz.

The School is designed to deepen your knowledge of social network analysis by covering core descriptive techniques alongside advanced methods, including Relational Event Models and Discourse Network Analysis.

Programme

Monday 21 September
Optional module introducing R and RStudio.

Tuesday 22 – Thursday 24 September
Full mandatory programme (see learning outcomes below).

Friday 25 September
Optional conference day, featuring a Keynote lecture and panel sessions.

*Attendance at the conference is included for school participants. If you wish to attend the one-day conference without participating in the School, a fee of €50 will apply.

Learning outcomes

  • Get an overview of key theories and data in political science network research
  • Understand the fundamentals of SNA, with RI, R II and R III
  • Learn core network analysis techniques
  • Gain practical experience in tools including R, DNA, Visone, and NetLogo
  • Become familiar with advanced tools such as Discourse Network Analysis (DNA), Exponential Random Graph Models (ERGM), Relational Event Models, and Agent-based Modelling (ABM).

All sessions are designed to accommodate both beginners and advanced participants on DNA. You may select sessions based on your interests and skill level.

Who can apply

This school is designed for graduate students (Master’s and doctoral levels), as well as researchers with an interest in the empirical study of social and political networks.

The school will be delivered in English; you are therefore expected to have a good command of written and spoken English.

Registration fees

The registration fee for the school is €350 and includes coffee breaks, lunch, welcome reception and a social dinner. You will also be given access to a one-day SNA conference, taking place on Friday 25 September.

If you wish to attend the conference only, you will need to register for this separately at a small fee of €50. This includes refreshments throughout the day and lunch.

If your application is successful, you will receive a direct link to register for the School.
