Over 2,000 scholars from across more than 45 countries gathered in Oslo for our 11th ECPR General Conference. Universitetet i Oslo were the hosts for four days of Panels, Roundtables and plenary events.
During the event, some 1,856 Papers were presented across 444 Panels and 72 Sections. A carefully structured academic programme meant that scholars from all areas of the discipline and across all career stages could participate in, and benefit from, invaluable discussion and debate.
In keeping with the soggy weather, social media was flooded with tweets and pictures of busy and interesting Panels, capturing the buzz of the conference. The #ecprconf17 hashtag made an appearance in more than 1,600 tweets by over 600 participants.
On Thursday 7 September, Johan P Olsen's Plenary Lecture dealt with Democratic Accountability and the Changing European Political Order. An audience of 500 came to listen at the spectacular University Aula, which is frescoed with oil paintings by Norway's most famous artist, Edvard Munch. The event was so popular that an overspill room had to be opened, live streaming the lecture to a further 150 participants. Watch the Lecture in full on our YouTube channel.
Following the Plenary Lecture, it was a pleasant walk through the city centre to Oslo’s old Bjørvika harbour area, where we held a welcome reception for more than 1,200 conference participants at the city's magnificent new Opera House.
The stimulating plenary programme ran throughout the event and included four Roundtables and six Featured Panels on subjects ranging from Brexit to Academic Freedom to the Internationalisation of Political Science Education.
Our sincere thanks to the conference Section Chairs for shaping the academic programme, and to our Panel Chairs and Discussants for delivering engaging and stimulating Panels.
Thanks, too, to our Local Organisers on the ground at Universitetet i Oslo, and to their superb red-shirted student helpers, for their warm hospitality and their smooth and efficient running of the event.
