Charles University

Founded in 1348, Charles University is among the oldest in the world, yet it is also renowned as a modern, dynamic, institution.

It is the largest and most renowned Czech university and belongs among the top three universities in Central and Eastern Europe.

Today Charles University welcomes nearly 50,000 students who are enrolled across its seventeen faculties, three institutes, six centres of teaching, research, development and other creative activities, and a centre providing information services.

Faculty of Social Sciences

The Faculty of Social Sciences was founded in 1990, playing a pivotal role in restoring social sciences studies.

Thanks to its five institutes, it offers full curricula in Political Science and Sociology and additional in the fields of Economics, Media and Communication and International Studies:

Institute of Political Studies

The Institute offers a fully-fledged university education in political science, international relations and security studies. It takes a very active part in research and regularly organises international conferences in its field.

History

1990 – The Department of Political Studies is founded shortly after the establishment of the Faculty of Social Sciences

1993 – The Institute of Political Studies is established during the restructuring of the Faculty.

1994 – The Department of International Relations is formed.

2015 – The Department of Security Studies is founded.

Department of Political Studies

The Department of Political Studies teaches politics at the Bachelor's level, with subsequent Master's and PhD programmes and organises rigorous exams. The Political Science - International Relations Bachelor programme operates on the basis of cooperation between the Department of Political Studies and the Department of International Relations.

The Department focuses on general political science, comparative politics and political geography, with research activities of its members engaged in decentralisation processes, local and regional politics, electoral studies, embracing democracy, language politics and migration.

The Department publishes two peer-reviewed journals – Acta Politologica and the Journal of Nationalism, Memory & Language Politics.

Local Organising Committee

The local hosts from the Institute of Political Studies work alongside the ECPR Events Team in organising the 2025 Joint Sessions.
