Abstract

In recent years, research on interest groups has increasingly begun to explore the mobilisation, strategies, and influence of such groups at the global level, in and around international organisations and processes. At the same time, International Relations scholars working on transnational actors in global governance have started to draw on theories and methods used in the study of interest groups in Europe and the US. This convergence in agendas suggests the emergence of a new vibrant research field at the intersection between Comparative Politics and International Relations. In this panel, we seek to advance this agenda by inviting papers that address issues of interest group/transnational actor mobilisation, advocacy, and influence in global governance. We expect papers to engage in theory-guided systematic research, and to contribute new data and insights on questions, such as: When, where and why do interest groups turn to the international level? What strategies are most common and conducive to interest group influence in international arenas? Under what conditions, and to whose advantage, do interest groups influence the outcomes of international policy-making?
