Abstract

This panel aims to bring together political philosophers to disentangle the various conceptual components of the ideal of solidarity and discuss its place within normative political theory. The proposed papers engage with an array of related questions concerning the justification of solidarity as a moral, social or political ideal; the relational normative grounds of solidarity; and its normative status as a right or a duty. An intended outcome of this discussion is to refine the understanding of solidarity and of its conceptual and normative relation with such other cognate ideals as justice and fairness.
