Abstract

This talk is based on a handbook article in the making, going through the main aspects of the concept of solidarity and discussing different subspecies of solidarity (moral, social, political). This talk goes beyond a mere survey in putting forward distinctive understandings of these subspecies. I approach solidarity as a form of (mutual) recognition. The importance of solidarity to moral theory is in stressing relational aspects, as well as the non-empirical, principled idea of a moral community. The importance of solidarity to social theory is in highlighting the nature of social bonds. The importance of solidarity to political theory is in stressing the notions of collective responsibility and networks of support in political struggles.
