Regional and international organizations play an essential role in shaping global and regional gender equality norms. However, the diversity of regional and international organizations, including the UN, EU, African Union or Mercosur, indicates that they differ widely in their aims and scope, from economic and trade cooperation to security alliances and political unions. Taking stock of this variety, this panel focuses on women’s leadership, both their ascendance to top-level positions and their exercise of leadership in these organizations. Literature shows that women in office play various roles, from agenda-setting to creating official and unofficial networks, building women’s coalitions, or initiating gender equality policies, among others. However, women’s leadership and agency in international and regional organizations remain understudied. Therefore, this panel aims to draw attention to women’s multifold roles and impact on multi-level global and regional governance processes and how different regional organizations have addressed gender.
