Abstract

This panel centers on women’s ascendance to and exercise of leadership beyond the immediate realm of government and politics. Given the global challenges to social justice and citizen equality in the 21st century, the status of gender equality and equity especially in the exercise of political, economic, and civic leadership is a central yardstick for the state of society and the international community at large. This panel transcends the scope of leadership research in the political domain to also include perspectives of women leaders and women’s agency in other societal arenas, including civil society, economics, higher education, law, sports, and finances. In doing so, it brings gender and politics in conversation with different sectors across society, engaging an interdisciplinary as well as trans- and international conversation on women and leadership.
