This panel will focus on LSBTIQ* individuals who work as state representatives or for state institutions. On the one hand, these people represent the state, make laws and enforce them; on the other hand, they themselves experience discrimination at work, problems due to existing laws and are often confronted with exclusion, also by the public. So, the question is how do LGBTIQ* people themselves, but also institutions, NGOs or the media deal with this? The first presentation considers the military and in particular the tension between an organisation framed as masculine and its LGBTIQ* members. The second presentation takes an organisational sociological look at the police and its LGBTIQ* employees. The third presentation starts there and asks the question how and why institutional necessities and the practice of policing can come into conflict with the rights of LGBTIQ* persons. The final presentation deals with trans* individuals in the German Bundestag and the public discourse around trans* issues in German politics.
