Democracy is in crisis worldwide. This is evidenced not only by the decline in voter turnout, but also by the rise of right-wing populist parties and the establishment of authoritarian regimes. Against this background, the panel will address the question of the extent to which forms of social democracy can serve to protect democracy. Specifically, the panel will discuss the extent to which it is the guarantee of social rights and the avoidance of excessive social divisions that ensure the stability of democratic regimes. The discussion will include contributions from the history of ideas, normative as well as empirical perspectives.
