Abstract

Though there is vivid research activity on EU agencies for decades now, the field is still dominated by single case studies or studies on small subsamples of the EU agency population. Though these studies provided valuable insights on many aspects of EU agencies – such as their autonomy, their behavioral strategies, their role in policy-making and implementation and their relationship with stakeholders and national administrative actors – it is time to piece the parts together to produce more generalizable knowledge on EU agencies as part of the European administrative system. This panel welcomes papers that compare many or all EU agencies and ask in which regards they are similar and vary (for example autonomy, reputational strategies, use of competences), how they differ from other organizations (e.g. national agencies), or how they developed over time.
