Abstract

Corruption is a core problem of equitable, democratic, and accountable governance around the world—but it is hard to capture due its hidden nature, and its explanations and consequences are highly context dependent. This panel features research scrutinizing the role of the bureaucracy in why corruption occurs, its consequences, and how it can be combatted, based on diverse data from Europe, Asia and Latin America. Topics include mask scandals in European countries during the COVID-19 crisis, individual conditions for being sanctioned for corruption in Brazil, periodic efficiency-enhancing effects of corruption in India, the role of populism and mistrust in Eastern Europe, and Bureaucratic Nepotism in Mexico.
