The panel tackles the pressing question if and to what extent existing state institutions are capable of initiating and pushing the necessary societal transformations towards rapid decarbonisation. Papers deal with present-day institutions like the welfare state and its ecological extensions as well as state-led democratic innovations like climate assemblies. Other papers pose more general questions about the possibility of 'greening' the state by transcending the growth imperative and about the potential role of novel transformative and existing futrure-oriented institutions in contemporary states.
