The Far-Right in Latin America

Abstract

Although the emergence of the far-right is not a new phenomenon and has reached a global dimension, until recent times the Latin American region has not experienced a massive presence of far-right parties or leaders. Things started to change with the presidential elections of Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil in 2017 and Nayib Bukele in El Salvador in 2019, and the surprising performance of José Antonio Kast in Chile in both the 2017 and 2021 elections. In addition, the far-right has been organized in other countries, with the cases of “Cabildo Abierto” in Uruguay, “Libertad Avanza” in Argentina, and “Renovación Popular” in Peru. While it is true that Bolsonaro lost the recent presidential election in Brazil, he obtained massive electoral support and therefore it is not far-fetched to suggest that the far-right is here for the foreseeable future. However, there are few studies about the far-right in the Latin American context and this panel aims to address this research gap by including papers on country cases (e.g. Brazil and Peru), conceptual debates (e.g. how to properly define the far-right in the Latin American region) and diffusion processes of far-right ideas between Europe and Latin America (e.g. the so-called Foro de Madrid).
