Abstract

Empirical corruption research faces a problem of defining, operationalizing and measuring a concept that is secretive nature, and susceptible to manipulation. The most commonly used indicators rely on perceptions and expert opinions, which are subject to bias. More research is needed to understand and mitigate these bias, as well as to explore risks and benefits of novel measurement strategies in corruption research. While an increasing amount of data and improved computational techniques offer new possibilities, limitations and benefits of different measurement approaches must be critically evaluated. This panel will address these issues and discuss new approaches to measuring corruption, welcoming both qualitative and quantitative reflections.
