Party competition over the issue of democracy

Abstract

Traditionally, party competition revolved around issues that are organised along either the left-right ideological dimension with its origins in classic social cleavages or the cultural dimensions. However, in most recent years scholars increasingly recognise the need to account for non-policy-based party competition. This is particularly true for the issue of democracy, i.e., whether parties/countries are democratic, behave in democratic ways or have consequences for the democratically relevant measures, such as polarization. This panel explores these issues.
