Abstract

This panel explores the intersection of gender, political participation, and foreign policy across the global south. Furthermore, the panel explores the interaction between gender and political participation through populist Radical Right PRR in varied contexts in the global south. Jennifer Thomson’s paper studies the complex relationship between populist radical right (PRR) governments and gender equality within US foreign policy. Taking a historical view, she maps the shift between various foreign policy stances since Obama to Biden. The paper seeks to answer how political ideologies are fair to the implementation and achievement of gender-related initiatives on the international stage. Dr. Selin’s paper takes a similar historical approach in exploring political conventions and the traditional notion of Turkey as a “father state” and how it continues to hinder women’s participation. In her paper, she further explores the notion of women’s agency in navigating the political realm dominated by extremism and far-right movements. Bhumi Purohit’s research also seeks to address similar questions of persistent barriers for female elected representatives. Through a pilot Randomized Control Trial (RCT), the study proposes the formation of peer solidarity groups among female politicians to enhance their political agency. The effectiveness of this intervention is compared with groups that include male political gatekeepers, providing insights into fostering meaningful political participation and representation of women's preferences. Shifting focus to Argentina, Maria Florencia Gayraud’s study explores the translation of legal equality principles into tangible outcomes. By analyzing the votes of judges in provincial high courts, the research assesses the incorporation of a gender perspective in decisions. Findings reveal a nuanced picture, emphasizing the need for a protocol with a gender perspective that aligns with Argentine legislation and addresses the specific needs of justice operators.  With these excellent contributions, the panel will address questions about how gender and political participation manifest across diverse contexts in the global south, what are the persistent barriers that hinder women’s participation, and what are traditional notions that affect equal participation. The panel will also offer specific insights into the rising phenomenon of the populist radical right (PRR) and delve into how it manifests differently across regions. Furthermore, the panel delves into notions of women’s agency, interventions, legal equality, and diversity of gender perspective in the realm of political participation.
