Abstract

According to the UN, China is one of the top five countries of origin of international migrants in 2020 with around 10 million Chinese living abroad (McAuliffe, M. and A. Triandafyllidou (eds.), 2021. World Migration Report 2022. International Organization for Migration). Moreover, the Covid-19 pandemic had a huge impact on the overseas Chinese around the world. The Chinese diaspora groups have become unwittingly prominent stakeholders in various global social issues and debates, such as the "Asian Lives Matter" movement, Chinese international students overseas, the Chinese labour under the BRI projects, and the global promotion of Chinese language and culture by Confucius Institutes. Many scholars have studied Chinese overseas communities from different perspectives and by interdisciplinary approaches. Against this background, this panel, bridging insights from scholars and practitioners, aim to discuss the everyday communication of the Chinese diaspora, as well as emerging diasporic podcasts, in Europe. These communities are considered as a simplified and unified group which has been investigated from political, economic, and socio-cultural perspectives. This panel looks at the communication from the Motherland with the overseas Chinese and within these diasporic communities. This panel brings scholars to unpack the cultural interactions of the Chinese diaspora as individuals, the disinformation within the group, and the information flow clash between Chinese diasporas and local communities, the changes in communication patterns and media of Chinese living overseas, and the social practices of the diaspora group on the ground. This panel contributes to various discussions of the SG. From the study of the Chinese diaspora, this panel analyses and suggests how global and intercultural communication occur and unfold in everyday life, and how the everyday practices re-echo, reflect, and reshape public opinion towards immigration and those narratives of belonging in diverse societies. This panel will offer both theoretical and empirical contributions to the topic.
