Abstract

The European Union (EU) and its Member States are committed to a sustainable and decarbonised future. In the EU's efforts to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, hydrogen is a key element. Understanding the complexities associated with hydrogen as an energy carrier is essential to successfully manage the energy transition. With this in mind, we gather contributions that help to fully understand the future of hydrogen in Europe and discuss the challenges and opportunities of hydrogen. We include papers on both EU and national hydrogen policies and governance. Our panel will address the following key issues: ▪️ Policy frameworks: Examining the evolving policy frameworks for hydrogen deployment in the EU and/or its member states. This could include analyses of regulatory structures, policy design, and the implications of these frameworks for the successful integration of hydrogen into the energy mix. ▪️ Stakeholder dynamics: Investigations of state-society-market relations in shaping hydrogen policy. ▪️ Infrastructure development: Insights into planning, challenges, and progress of hydrogen infrastructure development. ▪️ International trade: Investigating the determinants and actors influencing the choice of hydrogen trading partners. We also welcome contributions with other perspectives that contribute to a broader understanding of the role of hydrogen in the European energy transition.
