Abstract

War and armed conflict are gendered phenomena as they impact men and women differently. One widely established effect of war is the rise of sexualized forms of violence against women and persons with a non-normative sexuality. Together the papers in this panel expand our understanding on the gendered effects of war by tackling other, less documented dimensions of war. One common theme is that war is not only/always paralyzing for women but may also have an activating effect on them, as some papers in the current panel demonstrate. The demise of empires at the end of a war and the emergence of representative institutions can also help women gain political rights. Not least, women can themselves become targets for recruitment by violent groups. The papers shed new light on the role of women during and in the aftermath of wars not only as victims but also as agents.
