Abstract

The Kosovo War of 1999 left a lasting impact on the lives of its survivors, with repercussions including loss of life, infrastructural damage, economic hardships, and psychological trauma. This study focuses on the post-war transformation through a gender perspective, employing a qualitative methodology involving semi-structured in-depth interviews and participant observation conducted in Albanian in September 2023. Specifically, the research delves into the experiences of women from the Cooperative Krusha, a business cooperative established by survivors in 2005. The study uncovers nuanced and evolving gender roles as women navigate diverse expectations and embrace new responsibilities. By examining the interplay between generational perspectives, economic dynamics, and individual choices, the research sheds light on the complex narrative of changing women's roles in post-war Kosovo. These narratives contribute to a broader dialogue on gender equality, challenging stereotypes, and fostering a more inclusive and equitable future. While both older and younger generations express support for women's involvement in various aspects of society, differences emerge in their perspectives. The older generation emphasizes a broad understanding, believing that limitations should not hinder women's societal roles. Conversely, the younger generation, while supportive, exhibits a slight influence of traditional ideas regarding suitable jobs for women. These findings align with previous studies on gender role shifts in post-war societies and provide valuable insights into the views of Kosovar society. Further research is recommended to explore the influences shaping the younger generation's approach, particularly in rural areas.
