The Political Economy of Differentiated Integration

Abstract

The link between economics and differentiated integration is well known: Richer countries will, on average, be more likely to seek opt-outs from EU law than poorer countries. However, the political economy of differentiated integration is still a large and under-studied question. This panel seeks to fill this gap both by applying a broad political economy perspective on differentiated integration, by studying the impact of EU economic policy on support for differentiation and studying differentiation in the EU's energy policy. The panel will thus make important contributions to our understanding of the interlinkage between economics and the differentiated European political order.
