Abstract

The landscape of International Organizations in the 21st century is increasingly complex, both in its composition and processes. Against this backdrop, this panel presents novel research shedding light on two sets of questions. First, how do external stakeholders and their actions constrain or facilitate the inner workings of IOs? In what kind of situations do external actors hold the most power, and when are IOs most insulated and independent from them? Second, what do we mean by "regime complexity"? How are IOs (and other actors) entangled, both in their practices and in the virtual space? How do new IOs navigate densely institutionalized spaces? The papers in this panel offer new evidence and a range of different methodological approaches to answer these questions.
