Abstract

Renegade regimes (frequently also referred to as ‘rogue states’, ‘outlaw states’, ‘pariah states’) put other members of the international community into a perplexing situation. On one hand, they exhibit unacceptable behavior – either towards their domestic populations or international order but on the other hand they often offer luring economic or political opportunities. The policies towards renegade regimes are the topic of the panel. This panel invites interventions from scholars of all theoretical and methodological approaches, firmly grounded in theory but providing novel insights into the policies towards renegades regimes. Unusual or rarely-used methodological and theoretical approaches are particularly welcome. The panel will address issues including: Which features drive policies of democratic countries towards renegade states? Why do states differ in their policies towards renegade states? What is the role of business and commercial interests in forming policies towards renegade states? Why do political leaders perceive the challenge posed by renegades in different ways? Are policies towards rogue states self-fulfilling? Do migrant communities play a role in molding policies towards renegade states? What is the role of the supranational and international bodies in creating policies towards renegade states?
