Abstract

IOs must cope with a highly (geo-)politicized environment and increasing contestation. Revisionist powers, populist leaders, and rising economies contest their norms and rules. IOs are also increasingly criticized by domestic publics and compete in an ever-denser institutional landscape. Responding to contestation is thus crucial for IOs’ resilience to maintain support and fulfil their mandates. How do IOs—and the various actors within IOs—respond to contestation? And under what conditions are they successful to ensure institutional resilience? To answer these questions, the panel brings together researchers studying IOs’ responses and resilience from different theoretical and methodological perspectives.
