Abstract

How does gender shape political engagement, and under what conditions are women more likely to participate? This panel answers these questions by examining both overall gender differences in political engagement between men and women, and how gender interacts with other factors to influence political engagement. Papers examine how gender interacts and intersects with a variety of factors, including race, ethnicity, location, and party-level factors, drawing on evidence from the USA and Europe. Together, the papers show that gender gaps in engagement are not fixed, but contingent on institutional settings, mobilisation strategies, and the ways in which political actors connect with voters.
