Abstract

Over the last years literature on anti-gender mobilization and politics flourished. Much of that research focused on the phenomenon and its appearance, including how anti-gender actors mobilize and are politically active. It investigates how they emerge, connect, get supported and who they support, what claims they make and what strategies they rely on. Recently, research also started investigating what strategies elected representatives and other politicians, who defend progressive gender equality and inclusive LGBTQIA+ politics, use in (growingly) hostile climates, or which tool boxes they have at their disposal. Interestingly, while often focusing on the political arena, a representation lens is marginal in studies on anti-gender mobilization and politics. This panel puts the question of representation centre stage and approaches it from different angles. It investigates the impact of anti-gender mobilization on the spaces, processes, and claims of representation. It looks into representation as a process, as doing or working, as a relation, as responsibilities of representatives and those they represent. In sum, this panel explores how anti-gender mobilization and politics impacts (our understanding of) political representation as what it is and/or ought to be.
