Abstract

This panel explores how democratic innovations and citizen-politician interaction can revitalize local democracy and enhance the legitimacy of local representative institutions. The panel is to be co-organized with the SG on Democratic innovations. It brings together theoretical and empirical perspectives on participatory mechanisms and political participation forms the local level. The panel examines how these practices reshape power relations, accountability, and trust between citizens and elected representatives. By focusing on diverse institutional and cultural contexts, it assesses both the opportunities and limitations of democratic innovation in strengthening local representation.
