Abstract

The process of weakening institutional checks over the executive branch in the United States during the presidency of Donald Trump (2025-2029) has fueled a debate on autocratization of the country’s regime. Similar processes can be identified around the world, providing data for comparison and lessons to politicians and scholars concerned about the state of US democracy. The panel aims to gather papers addressing the US case comparatively or focusing on other cases of autocratization or democratic resilience that share similar patterns. In these shifting contexts, presidential actions may shape regime trajectories by weakening controls and expanding their authority or, on the other hand, by bolstering legitimacy and democratic resilience.
