Abstract

Arguably, democracy and intra-party democracy are intimately related. It is hard to see how democracy could flourish if all or most parties competing in a national party system were organized in non-democratic ways. Essentially, democracy is about the distribution of power. This can be spatial or functional. In addition, it can be representational in that certain groups need to be represented in party bodies. Last but not least, digitalization of intra-party decision-making plays an important role here. This panel brings together these aspects and looks at the horizontal and vertical decentralization of parties, candidate selection procedures (including the European level) and female representation. It combines single-country with broadly comparative perspectives drawing on large datasets.
