Abstract

Recent theories of political representation highlight the practice or the ‘doing’ of representation. Crucial to this approach is understanding how representation is staged, curated and worked on. This panel will touch upon these and related facets of representation from multiple angles and by posing critical questions. How and where are relations of representation claimed, asserted, enacted or offered? What settings are used or preferred, and what worlds can be evoked in which new forms of representation emerge? What material and symbolic aspects of stages and settings do we need to examine to gain insight into the textures of representation? How do political actors create and curate the roles they need to play and gather the material and other resources needed to become representative(s)? Who can be empowered or disempowered by different stages and settings of representation – for example, when representers and represented are literally present to each other – and gain access to resources for constructing representative personas? What work is required to enable the effective making of representative claims, and what are the dynamics of political life in the ‘spotlight’ as well as in less visible ‘behind the scenes’ preparations? Drawing on empirical studies (specifically focused on Australia and Belgium) and an eclectic range of theoretical resources (from the notion of the carnivalesque to performance theory), the panel will interrogate these and other questions with the aim of illuminating novel and sometimes less visible aspects of political representation.
