Abstract

This panel addressed questions related to gendered narratives and impacts of different forms of political communication, addressing representations of politicians as well as narratives about feminism and gender equality policies and the affective power of these narratives and representations. Empirically, the papers cover both social media and traditional news media in different national contexts. The topics include: anti-feminist influencers in TIkTok and Instagram and the different roles they adopt to disseminate anti-feminism as an ideology; mediated representations of Lidewij de Cos, the young female leader of the Dutch radical right party Forum for Democracy (FvD); discursive constructions of gendered conceptions of political leadership in press coverage of campaign events in France; newspaper coverage of gender quota debates in Germany; and feminist entrepreneurs, business, influencers and artists affecting social change through engagements with capitalist sites.
