Abstract

The digital transformation of political and social organisations—including political parties, trade unions, and lobbying groups—is redefining the ways in which these actors interact with society, mobilise supporters, and structure internal decision-making. Yet, the depth, scope, and consequences, or the intensity and effects of these processes, remain uneven and understudied across organisational types, national contexts, and analytical perspectives. This panel seeks contributions investigating the degree of digitalisation within political and social organisations and analysing the factors driving this diversity, bringing together empirical and theoretical contributions for analysing the digitalisation of organisations and its implications for linkage, representation, and organisational change. Papers may address empirical cases, comparative or large-N studies, and theoretical debates on how digital tools enhance or complicate the linkage function between organisations and their respective constituencies. The panel welcomes a diverse range of methodological and theoretical approaches. We particularly encourage contributions that: - Examine digitalisation as a process of organisational adaptation and innovation. - Examine the level and intensity of digitalisation in political and social organisations and the factors that account for its difference. - Examine the technical, organisational, or political challenges that obstruct digital transformation. - Explore the impact of digitalisation in the linkage function of digital tools in membership engagement, representation, and advocacy. - Analyse cross-sectoral and cross-national variations in digitalisation and digitalisation strategies. - Discuss normative implications of digitalisation for democratic participation and governance.
