This panel examines methodological approaches to studying democracy beyond the boundaries of the nation-state. The papers explore the role of methodological nationalism in understanding democratic backsliding, the use of grounded normative theory to incorporate the perspectives of displaced communities in the Anthropocene, and the potential of relational and comparative approaches to decolonize political theory. Together, the papers consider how political research can move beyond nationally bounded perspectives and develop more inclusive, global approaches to understanding democracy.
