Abstract

Democratic innovations have become widely used among institutions and political parties to increase citizens’ engagement. Building on work that defines democratic innovations as new processes or institutions that deepen citizen participation, deliberation and influence in governance, the panel compares reforms inside parties in broader representative systems and in local governments. Empirically, the panel brings together cases from established and newer democracies, and from both mainstream and challenger parties, to assess the mixed effect of democratic innovations for inclusion, internal equality, member engagement and policy impact.
