Abstract

In recent years, democratic innovations have been used extensively by political parties and other national and international institutions as tools to engage citizens more in the decision-making process. So far, the existing literature has focused heavily on how the democratic innovations are used, who participates and who supports these procedures. However, we know little about how voters of new political parties view democratic innovations. Our paper fills this gap in the literature and seeks to understand why voters of new parties support direct democratic and deliberative practices. We compare their view to those of voters for established political parties. The paper uses individual level data from surveys on national representative samples in Czechia, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. The data was collected between December 2025 and February 2026 and our analysis relies on ordinal logistic regressions.
