Abstract

While research on populist radical right (PRR) parties has increased exponentially in recent decades, few studies have been able to ‘get inside’ these organisations. This panel discusses two new books which do so: “Grassroots Women in the Populist Radical Right” by Sofia Ammassari, and “Youth Wings of the Populist Radical Right” by Duncan McDonnell, Sofia Ammassari, Ann-Cathrine Jungar, Anders Jupskås, and Cas Mudde. Drawing on an extensive collection of original quantitative and qualitative data, these books examine women’s and young people’s involvement in the PRR, showing how both sets of actors play vital roles in these parties’ organisation, evolution, and normalisation. Taken together, these two studies exemplify and promote a much needed ‘internalist turn’ in comparative research on PRR parties.
