Speakers Sari Hanafi, American University of Beirut Asmaa Abusamra, University of Oslo Universities are often among the silent casualties of conflict. Wars, political repression, sanctions, and forced displacement disrupt education, research, and international collaboration, affecting not only institutions but also the lives and careers of students and scholars. This webinar examines the impact of conflict on higher education, with attention to Gaza and other crisis-affected regions. It explores the consequences of displacement, restrictions on academic freedom, and the growing challenges faced by universities operating in conditions of insecurity and instability. The discussion will also highlight the role of scholar support programs, international academic networks, and global partnerships in sustaining research, education, and hope during times of crisis. The presentation argues that academic solidarity must go beyond statements of support and evolve into practical mechanisms that protect scholars, preserve educational opportunities, and strengthen the resilience of academic communities in times of conflict.
