While cultural diversity in general is a well investigated aspect of social science research, its role for democratization and regime (in)stability has mainly been neglected in previous literature. Therefore the panel addresses the role of cultural diversity and minority groups for regime stability and the prospects of regime change, while considering the role of ethnic conflicts. The panel invites papers addressing questions such as: Which ‘kind’ of cultural diversity matters most for regime change and stability? Which factors influence the impact of cultural diversity on regime change and stability? Which role do ethnic conflicts play as an explanatory variable for regime change and stability in culturally heterogeneous societies? How significant are a common identity and an integrated political community in culturally heterogeneous societies? Do policies which address cultural minority issues (e.g. institutionalized representation) have an effect on the integration of the political community?
