Abstract

As a relatively new, and increasingly prominent, security actor, the European Union has sought to add a more comprehensive approach to conflicts. This entails both the de-emphasising of military-centric solutions as well as incorporating the promotion of democratic governance. The involvement of the EU has been critiqued both externally and internally in terms of effectiveness in dealing with the issues confronting Europe and its bordering regions. This panel looks to examine the developing role of the EU as a security actor, and the issues it confronts.
