This panel consists of papers presenting different dynamics of institutional governance at the regional level, with a particular focus on Europe. The regional emphasis, however, is integrated in a broader global context through analyses of both the implications of European policymaking outside of its borders and the responses at the European level to institutions promoted globally for the support and promotion of governance. Based on a broad understanding of institutions as formal organizations, norms, laws, and policies, enclosed papers advance arguments about civil society involvement for accountability in EU relations to neighbouring countries, the management of European intervention in conflict in the Middle East region, balanced policymaking in regulatory governance of industrial sectors, and the power of institutions for the promotion and protection of human rights. Finally, papers included in this panel present a methodologically and theoretically diverse engagement with the institutional dynamics of European policymaking and its implications for contemporary global governance.
