Abstract

This paper proposes a mixed methods analysis of institutional power of national institutions for the promotion of governance, focusing on national human rights institutions, anti-corruption agencies, and gender equality bodies. The project draws on the literature of cross-border institutional diffusion, in particular the diffusion and power of human rights and gender regimes. The focus of the first level of analysis is on the role that membership in regional and international organizations plays in the power of the institutions mandated to promote and protect human rights at the domestic level. At the first level of analysis, the study builds on an original data set for 202 countries. At the medium level, the qualitative comparative analysis includes all three types of institutions and has a geographic focus on Europe, isolating for EU impact on the power of these institutions for the promotion of governance.
